Why orcas.pt remains a web & bot platform (and why we don't build a mobile app) 🌊⛵
A common question we receive from the community is: "Is there an official orcas.pt app?"
The short answer is no, and that is by design.
When creating tools for sailors along the Iberian coast, our priority has always been universal access, accuracy, data privacy, and direct human connection. Here is why we operate through orcas.pt and our Telegram alert bot:
1️⃣ Universal hardware compatibility
Native apps often require recent phone models or modern operating systems to run. orcas.pt works independently of whatever hardware you own. Whether you are using an older smartphone, a tablet, or a PC on board, you can access all our information and connect directly with our active communication groups.
2️⃣ All the features, none of the app bloat
Our Telegram bot does everything a dedicated app would do—including proximity alerts relative to your position, live interaction updates, and quick one-tap reporting.
3️⃣ Personalized guidance & direct contact
An app creates a barrier between the user and the creator. On orcas.pt, you can contact me (Rui) directly to discuss route planning, ask questions about recent activity, or get personalized safety advice before setting sail.
4️⃣ In-depth context, not just simple pings
We don't just send automated warnings. We provide comprehensive situational awareness: pod tracking, environmental forecasts, group behaviors, and verified community logs.
5️⃣ Strict data privacy (no data selling)
To maintain a mobile app on app stores, developers often monetize by selling user location history. orcas.pt does not sell any user data. Your position and privacy are fully protected.
6️⃣ Funded by the community
The running costs and server infrastructure of orcas.pt are sustained through direct, voluntary contributions from sailors who rely on the platform. This keeps our service independent and dedicated strictly to your safety.
Thank you for being part of this community and keeping our waters safer together!
